UPDATED 09/20/2018

As expected, on Monday, September 17th about 1PM, Apple began “pushing out” updates to iOS 12.

The first thing to keep in mind, is that it’s always a good idea to NOT immediately update your iPhone or iPad when there is a big version change (i.e. when the “main” iOS number changes). It’s usually best to wait a few weeks to make sure that the release doesn’t have some type of strange bug that will cause you problems.

Keeping that in mind, here is what you need to know about iOS 12…

On What?

iOS 12 will run on all devices that are able to run iOS 11, which includes

  • iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X
  • iPad Air, Air 2, and 5th Gen
  • iPad Mini 2, 3, and 4
  • All iPad Pros
  • iPod Touch 6th Gen

What’s New?

The good news is, there aren’t any big, dramatic changes in how you use the iOS (i.e. you won’t have to relearn anything major).

With this iOS release, Apple is focusing on performance and quality improvements, along with fixing some of the complaints with iOS 11.

When I upgrade both my iPhone and my iPad the day iOS 12 was released, after the update was complete I could hardly tell that it happened.  Things really do look just about the same.

But even with their focus on performance, Apple does gives us a number of new features that are worth mentioning.

Here are the highlights of what you can expect with iOS 12

  • Performance improvements – Apps launch faster, especially when you have multiple apps open. Expect up to 70% faster opening of the Camera App, and 50% faster pop-up of the keyboard.
  • Animoji” (animated emjois) which you can customize to look like more like you.
  • Facetime will support up to 32 people at the same time, and allow you to launch a “Group Facetime” right from a group thread in Messages.
  • Add fun filters and effects in Messages and Facetime using the enhanced Effects Camera feature.
  • Enhancements to Siri, including a Shortcuts feature where you can build a series of automated steps in various apps that can be activated with Siri voice commands. Siri will now also work with more 3rd party apps (if those apps take advantage of Siri).
  • A Screen Time feature that shows you details on how you use your iOS device, and then set time limits that can remind you to use certain features less. This will be especially useful for parents who want to better monitor what their kids are doing.
  • An instant tuning feature that allows you to quickly manage and modify notifications as they arrive so that you can lesson interruptions.
  • An automatic Do Not Disturb that you can set just for a certain time and then have it automatically turn off.
  • New tools for creating, storing, and auto filling passwords.
  • A For You option in the Photo App that automatically shows “moments” from your Photo Library and then suggests sharing those photos with people that are in them.
  • Enhanced photo search features (to let you more easily find photos by place or who is in the photo).
  • Various improvements to the built-in Apple Apps.
  • Automatic Updates feature in Settings which lets you have your device update automatically when a new iOS version is released
